Monotheism in Science (From a Religious Criterion to the Desired Science)

Abstract
Among the macro-questions in the philosophy of religion is the problem of “religion-based science.” Key issues include: What is meant by religious science? What is the criterion for a science’s being religious? Is such a science possible? Which disciplines are capable of “becoming religious”? What properties must they exhibit to count as religious, and in which factors and components should those properties be sought? These are metascientific questions. One influential position in this field is the view of tawḥīd-centered science, which attends both to the scientificity of science and to its religiosity. Using an explanatory, rational method, this article lays out the theoretical and conceptual framework of the debate, and articulates the criterion for the religiousness of science together with its underlying foundations. The findings are as follows: the unity of the criterion alongside a plurality of factors and components as its indicators; the gradational (tashkīkī) character of the criterion in each discipline in accordance with that discipline’s nature and capacities; and the capacity of the tawḥīd-centered view to generate, refine (tahdhīb), and complete the sciences.
