Understanding the attributes of God in the Holy Qur'an has been one of the enduring challenges for Islamic scholars throughout the history of Islamic sciences. In the Qur'an, it is rare to find a divine attribute that is entirely free from anthropomorphic expression. Most descriptive (informative) attributes of God reflect some degree of embodiment or personification that appears to conflict with deeply rooted Islamic theological beliefs. The variety of interpretive approaches to these attributes suggests their interpretative flexibility. This study, employing descriptive and rational methods alongside a cognitive linguistic approach and the conceptual metaphor theory seeks to answer the question: What role does personification play in interpreting God’s descriptive attributes? The findings of the study—through an analysis of the term soul in verse 116 of Surah al-Ma'idah the word "light" in verse 35 of Surah al-Nur and a set of related verses—demonstrate that conceptual metaphor theory offers a meaningful framework for interpreting the Qur'an’s descriptive attributes. While this approach allows for deeper engagement with the text, it does not imply anthropomorphism or likening God to creation. Rather, it respects foundational Islamic beliefs while offering a renewed, insightful methodology for analyzing divine attributes in the Qur'an.
